My thesis addressed the definition of body image, its history, associated problems, and its impact on art. In the written part, I focused on the values of body image and explored how they have changed over time. I discussed my experience with body dysmorphic disorder and how it has influenced me as an artist.
As the creative part of my final project, I produced a photo series in which I attempted to visualize an episode of my body dysmorphic disorder as accurately as possible. The images depict a person with a distorted body image experiencing an anxiety attack while looking at themselves in the
mirror and beginning to “perfect” themselves through surgery. The goal of my thesis was to educate myself and potential readers in this field and to use the
creative process as a therapeutic means of expression while battling body dysmorphia.
