SUMMARY

The aim of this thesis was to find a suitable blend of natural components found in Estonia for fabrication of designed interior elements. The work is separated into four main chapters, where the first partgives a literary overview of resources of Estonia and their history, mainly focusing on materials possibly useful for the thesis –clays, vegetal fibers and oils. In the second part a series of tests were performed with previously researched materials and statistics were compiled to find a blend of materials suitable for the purpose. For the objective of the product, three different measurement tests were performed –density, volume shrinkage and crumbling, to find the most suitable combination of materials.Tests performed to find the lowest density combinations showed, that Kambrium blue clay with an additive of corrugated cardboard dust had the lowest densities 4 times out of 5. The lowest of four was 1.5% fiber and 30% moisture combination with density of 0.93 g/mm³. Volume shrinkage tests showed that 5 times out of 5 red clay with an additive of chipped hemp had the lowest results. The lowest of five was 1% fiber and 10% moisture combination, which preserved 93.7% of its volume. Crumbling tests showed that red clay had an overall tendency to crumble more than Kambrium blue clay. For comparison –blue clay did not show any crumbling with 4 different fibers as red clay did not show any crumbling with 2 different fibers out of 6. Third part describes how the product idea came to be and addresses product design processes with chosen design mediums. In the final chapter the product was made using materials which were tested and design which was made to blow life into ideas still on paper. During the entirety of making this work, steps taken were analyzed –where mistakes were made and how to go forward after this thesis is done. This entire work is a very good base for further testing and research –the possibilities are endless! All in all clay is a material with soul –getting ahead of yourself and it shows you your place, underestimating it and it shows you what its capable of. It is very possible to make a functional product from raw clay and some fiber when you have the scientific and cognitive knowledge.
